The Secret is not for me

I just heard about The Secret, this supposedly amazing book. I did a little research and found out it has become a craze because of The Oprah Effect - that is, whatever Oprah endorses makes millions. I dug further to find a clip of The Secret on Google video. After watching the video I'm convinced that this is garbage. (In fact, I found the video to be quite amusing.) Although metaphysics is a valid branch of philosophy, ideas derived from metaphysics are NOT testable. In other words, they're just ideas that are not based on any sound science. Also, the idea of thinking positively has always been a technique that therapists have used to bolster self-esteem. This is not new - and yes, it does work. The main reason I have a problem with this book is because it is being marketed as an amazing life-saver, when in reality, it is not. I mean, seriously, "I've seen cancer dissolved." Wow, just wow. For those of you who actually believe in The Law of Attraction, I sincerely hope it works for you. As for me, I'll stick to science.

Update: here's an interesting article on Salon about The Secret
